Romantic and decorative late Victorian brass & Iron bedstead. With seven boldly pressed brass ornamental badges to both head and foot ends, this bedstead’s clean and less grandiose design hints at the designs that the new century would welcome to household furniture of the day and 20th century architectural features too. Deeply swooping top rails, bulbus spun brass collars and heavy cast brass top knobs all add to this bedsteads understated but reassuringly bold design statement. In turn they make it as popular a choice for todays bed buyers as it was when it was made at the end of the Victorian era, circa 1895.
This bedstead is currently standing in excellent, as found condition having been the subject of a previous restoration, possibly in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century. As such it can be either cleaned and sympathetically re-worked and sold looking pretty much as it does here or have full workshop restoration. When less work is carried out it generally follows that the bedsteads sales price will be lower than indicated here.

The images shown here of bed ref: 9723B72 show this bedstead complete with a combined mattress and bedstead height of 30cm (12”). A statement Brass & Iron bedstead such as this one could accommodate a deeper mattress and base height but if this exceeds 37.5cm (15”). One should be mindful that making a bedstead’s overall mattress height either too high or too low can impact the aesthetic integrity of the overall scheme one is seeking to create.
