180cm Antique Brass & Iron Half Tester 9721B72

Wonderfully understated, early Victorian Brass & Iron Half-Tester Bedstead by Peyton & Peyton.  Made circa 1850 this ultra rare full 6ft (180cm, modern UK Super King Size) started life in full half-tester bedstead (see the example picture of this format).  However, at some point its high posts have been cut short.  Currently standing un-restored, our highly skilled team of restorers can either re-instate this bedstead as a full half-tester or make a more professional job of the cutting down work already carried out.

In all, a fine bedstead that will bring some regal majesty to a formal country house bedroom scheme alone with a wonderful central bedroom feature.

About the maker; Edward and Richard Peyton were both friends and peers of Robert Winfield.  Courtesy of Winfield’s generous nature much of Peyton’s product capability matched his firms’ mastery in cast brass detail and ormolu finish.  The Peyton’s however ploughed their own furrow structurally, for example, these bedsteads have unique lead-filled joints, exclusive to their firm.

See also our additional image of an advertisement for this firm which is rare in that it provides an sketch of the place of production.  This advertisement was originally produced in the ‘New Illustrated Directory’ entitled Men & Things of Modern England (Birmingham, M Billing, 1858) p 62.  At the same Bordesley Works, Birmingham, Richard & Edward Peyton produced early patent Dovetail-Jointed Brass and Iron Bedsteads

Mattresses & bedstead Bases:
The images shown here of bed ref: 9725B72 show this bedstead complete with a combined mattress and bedstead height of 37cm (12”). A statement Brass & Iron bedstead such as this one could accommodate a deeper mattress and base height but if this exceeds 40cm (14½”). One should be mindful that making a bedstead’s overall mattress height either too high or too low can impact the aesthetic integrity of the overall scheme one is seeking to create. As such we recommend speaking to one of our highly experienced team for further advice on our own Suffolk Journeyman range of mattresses and bedsteads bases.
Our mattresses and bedstead bases are a highly unique part of the Bed Bazaar antique bedstead business.
