5ft Antique French Painted & Upholstered Bedstead – Ref. 5864W60

£3,500.00

Classic Antique French carved, painted, and upholstered bedstead with a charming demi-lune head and Corbeau footboard. A rare large double size from earlier 19th-century production, this fine Louis 16th Style bed frame would have been produced in Paris, circa 1880. Delightfully carved at the base of the foot end with infinity cloister-arch carved detail continuing the length of the side rails. A cross-bound reed-inspired carved detail navigates the show-wood top rails of the head and foot. Fine, early beds such as this are very hard to find in big sizes now.

Currently standing unrestored and awaiting further direct customer instruction. This may entail just a light touch cleaning type restoration and any attention the frame may need to support a new mattress and bedstead base. Alternatively, for the price stated, the bedstead will be fully restored including repainting and re-upholstery. This would be to our customer’s specific instruction and to suit their personal taste and, of course, can be tailored to suit the pre-existing décor of their chosen bedroom.

Whilst specialist finishes such as gilding and deep-buttoned upholstery in luxury fabric may attract additional charges, this bedstead’s final price point could also work out lower, the less work we carry out. Many of our customers find beauty in these French beds when they come complete with their ‘as found’ imperfections, equally as appealing as when we restore to our renowned high standards of fit and finish. Whichever way, what we can assure though is whether it’s highly restored or sold with as little intervention as possible, they all have unique character, history, and so often an understatement in decadence too. So, finish-wise, what can we say other than; ‘chacun pour soi’ scenarios.

Mattresses & Bedstead Bases:
The images shown here of bed ref: BA 5864A60 do not show this bedstead complete with bedstead base and mattress. How ever we would recommend a combined mattress and bedstead height of 38cm (15”). With a statement antique French upholstered bedstead one should not be shy of bring the mattress height almost to the top of the footboard; level even if desired. One should be mindful that making a bedstead’s overall mattress height either too high or too low can impact the aesthetic integrity of the overall scheme one is seeking to create. As such we recommend speaking to one of our highly experienced team for further advice on our own Suffolk Journeyman range of mattresses and bedsteads bases.
