Waring & Gillow
Waring & Gillow was a distinguished English furniture manufacturer and antique dealer, established in 1897 through the merger of two renowned firms: Gillows of Lancaster and London, and Waring of Liverpool. The origins of Gillows of Lancaster date back to around 1730, when Robert Gillow (1704–1772) founded a luxury furniture and furnishings business.

Trained as a joiner, Robert Gillow capitalized on the profitable West Indies trade in the 1730s, exporting fine mahogany furniture while importing rum and sugar. After his passing in 1772, his two sons, Richard and Robert, carried on the business. In 1764, Thomas Gillow and William Taylor expanded the company by establishing a London branch at 176 Oxford Road, now known as Oxford Street. The firm soon gained a reputation for producing exceptional furniture for some of the wealthiest households in Britain.

Mattresses & Bedstead Bases:
The images shown here of bed ref: 9422WC42 show this bedstead complete with a combined mattress and bedstead height of 36 cm (14”). An Edwardian caned wooden bedstead, such as this one, would not comfortably accommodate a deeper mattress and a higher base height. One should be mindful that making a bedstead’s overall mattress height either too high or too low can impact the aesthetic integrity of the overall scheme one is seeking to create.
