5ft Victorian Oak Bedstead – Ref. BA 9604W6075

Victorian solid Oak bedstead in the ‘Arts & Crafts’ style, made circa 1890. Currently standing unrestored, its price includes full, professional renovation. In ‘museum’ condition, making it a bedstead of investment quality – as reliable as a bank and built like a battleship, characteristic of bedsteads of this ilk and provenance.
Provenance – From the Edinburgh home of Mrs Anne Clapperton – a prominent family whose window can be seen in St Giles Cathedral, overlooking the Royal Mile. Subsequently acquired by Bed Bazaar directly from the Clapperton family and offered for sale for the first time since its original commission by the family.
Alexander Clapperton was born in 1781 in Crichton, Midlothian. In 1814, Alexander, along with his brother John, became a life member of The Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, holding various positions within the Chamber, including Chairman. On 25th July 1816, at Colinton, Alexander married Ann Hume, a farmer’s daughter. They raised a family of twelve: nine girls and three boys, a full football team’s worth (in the days of only one substitute). The business, John Clapperton & Co, operated at No. 371 High Street in the Royal Mile.
Alexander died on 28th April 1849 and was buried in St Cuthbert’s Kirkyard. His obituary describes him as a generous man. This generosity is reflected in the donations he made to several public memorials, including Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and James Watt.

Restoration work to include a formal deep clean via Libnet PPC. Button polishing the Oak will follow via a traditional re-French polishing process by our senior, master French polisher. Finally we cut back the button polished finish and hand hard wax to add authentication of age thus avoiding the ‘over-restored’ look!
